Dear Lynx families/Chères familles Lynx,

Another busy week complete here at GP Vanier. I want to thank the teachers and families who came after school this week for meetings involving our Grade 8 outdoor school trip as well as our grade 9 French trip to Eastern Canada.

As we approach the end of the school year, the team here is already busily planning for the 2024-25 school year. Our Open House is coming up next Thursday evening (more information on that is below) and we are expecting a full house. We are projected to be a school of limited capacity but, just like many schools in the city, we continue to experience growth. When I began at Vanier a couple years ago we had an enrolment of 440 students, while currently, as I write this update, we have over 580 registered for next year. This does not include prospective late French Immersion students who will be attending our Open House or families that are continuing to move into our community. I will give families an update on enrolment numbers closer to the end of the school year.

Finally, we have had to speak to numerous students at the school about their behaviour in the washroom. Over the past few months, it has become a place where students congregate at various points of the day, including during class time. This is impacting their learning time and making other students feel unsafe when they need to use the washroom. Teachers will be looking at ways to change this behaviour and speaking with their classes next week. I do want to highlight that this message does not apply to the vast majority of our students, and I want to thank the ones that came forward to let us know how this behaviour made them feel and asked us to address it. We are a better school when students choose to do things that make us better, and for many of the students who came forward, this also meant negotiating the conflict between peer relationships and recognizing the greater community. This is something that is incredibly difficult, often scary, and especially conflicting at a time in their lives when peers are so important. However, it is these students that go on to make Vanier, and their communities, better places.

Bonne fin de semaine,
