Dear Vanier Families,
Welcome to the end of January. A reminder that there is no school tomorrow as it is a system PD Day. The teachers in our French Immersion program will be at Crescent Heights attending a whole system languages symposium, and the teachers in our English program will be at various professional development opportunities around the system. I am very proud to let you know that numerous Vanier teachers will be leading this PD, in both English and French.
Vanier had a successful first week of the volleyball season with all our teams recording victories. Also, a huge thank you to our coaches (both teachers and volunteers) for donating their time and effort to the program. A few teams in our division had to drop out due to lack of coaches, so families of athletes, please make sure that you check with your child’s coach for the updated schedule. It will also appear week by week in my weekly updates.
A reminder that next Wednesday, February 4th, we are having our open house for new and prospective students. It will start in the main gym at 6:30 pm.
Finally, we are currently undertaking a 3-year program monitoring review of French program. This is something that all the French programs are doing in our area to better understand strengths and areas of growth across the program. One of the things we heard from parents is they would like more information around Oral French; what it is, why it is important and what it looks like at Vanier. We have created a flat sheet with some information for families which can be accessed here .
Bonne weekend,
Mr. Chad Edmonds

Vanier Community Corner
Crochet Club
Our crochet club has been hooking students in faster than we expected! It’s sew much fun—but we’re starting to run low on wool. If you have any extra yarn at home, we’d love a thread of support. Every ball helps us keep the creativity going! The crochet club will also be selling some of their creations at lunchtime to raise money for more resources!

Outdoor Education Donations
Our Outdoor Education program continues to accept gently used equipment, including:
- Cross-country ski gear (boots, skis, poles)
- Snowshoes
- Daypacks
- Multiday backpacking backpacks
- Hiking boots
- Tarps, sleeping pads, and sleeping bags
Please contact Mr. Eitzen at mdeitzen@cbe.ab.ca for details.
Hall Passes
We are looking for interesting and unique items that we can use for classroom hall passes. For example, one class has a rubber duck, another has a small hub cap. We use these passes to minimize student traffic during class time, and it lets teachers quickly identify which students have permission to be in the hallway and what class they are from at a distance. If you have any items that fit this description, please send them to school and we will gladly put them to use.

Volleyball Season Begins!
We are in a division this year with SJAM, Queen Elizabeth, Colonel Irvine, Senator Patrick Burns, and TB Riley. As a division, we have agreed upon similar expectations for games that promote safety, respect and a positive experience for players, coaches, other spectators and the hosting school. The expectations are as follows:
- All students (spectators and athletes) must leave school at the end of the day, before the games start at 4:00 PM. Students who wish to stay to watch Vanier play need to have permission from the staff to stay to supervise.
- Players who remain at the school must remain in the gym and are not to be wandering the school. Also, food and drink are not permitted in the gym.
- For all Away games, students must have their own parent or guardian accompany them to all games. They may not be supervised by someone who is not their parent/guardian.
- There are no in and out privileges for spectators. If you leave the building you should not re-enter.
- All visitors must enter our building through the schools main doors only. Entrance through an alterative door may trigger security protocols and result in significant consequences for students letting others in the school. This would be a significant security risk for everyone in the building.
- Student spectators without parental supervision will be directed by the hosting school administration to leave the building immediately.
- All spectators are expected to cheer and support the players, coaches, referees, etc. in a positive manner.
- Disrespectful behaviour from students or spectators will be addressed by the hosting school administration as well as your home school administration as a follow up. The student and parent code of conduct applies at all times. Spectators may be asked to leave the school depending on the severity of the issue. Parents also may be asked not to return.
- Parents/guardians who bring younger children are responsible for direct supervision at all times. The rest of the school is closed and off limits. Please ensure children are not in the hallways or playing on the stage or with any school equipment.
Thank you for supporting a safe, respectful, and positive athletic environment.
