Dear Vanier Families,

This week, please take a moment to read the messages below from Ms. Peggy Goddard, our new librarian, and Mr. Eitzen about an open opportunity for Grade 9 students to join the upcoming backpacking trip.

Congratulations are in order for the Alberta Chung Wah School, who is celebrating their 30th anniversary at GP Vanier! This program has allowed countless students to connect with their family's language and culture, and in many cases achieve high school credits in Mandarin for doing so.

Bon Voyage to our Grade 9 students who left for Quebec, Montreal, and Ottawa this morning. They will be spending the next week out East, having the opportunity to practice putting their French language learning to use.

Finally, a happy Mother's Day to all Moms this Sunday!

Bon weekend, Mr. Chad Edmonds, Principal, École Georges P. Vanier School

Library Message from Ms. Peggy Goddard

Dear Parents,

As the school year is winding down, one of the important tasks for us is to collect all outstanding library books. All books are valuable resources that belong to the CBE to help students learn. In the case of lost or missing books, a replacement fee will be charged.

Our final due date this school year is May 29. As part of our policy, we understand that books are already in a used condition, and therefore a depreciation fee based on the book's face value will be charged should your child be unable to return it by the final due date.

We appreciate your understanding and help.

Sincerely, GPV School

Grade 9 Outdoor Education Backpacking Trip

The Outdoor Education program is sponsoring a 3-day, 2-night backpacking trip to Mt. Romulus Backcountry Campground from May 25-27. While this trip is normally offered to the current Grade 9 Outdoor Education class, there are a few limited spots available open to the Grade 9 class as a whole.

To be eligible to attend, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be in good academic and social standing in their school subjects
  • Must be in good physical condition - students will be carrying up to a quarter of their body weight for up to 12 km per day
  • Previous outdoor education experience is an asset
  • Must attend sessions during lunch
  • Parents must attend a mandatory information session on Monday, May 18 at 6:00 PM
  • Cost of the trip is $60

A parent information letter and itinerary are attached. If your student is interested in attending, please contact Mr. Eitzen at mdeitzen@cbe.ab.ca. The deadline to sign up is Monday, May 18.

Murray Eitzen, Outdoor Ed and Construction, GP Vanier

ConnectED Parents Support

ConnectED Parents is a free text message program for parents and caregivers of children and teens aged 6-20. Developed by Shift: The Project to End Domestic Violence at the University of Calgary, it shares short, practical tips to help parents talk about healthy relationships and dating violence prevention. No app or extra materials are needed!

ConnectED Parents has already helped 300+ parents feel more confident talking with their kids about healthy relationships. Since completing the program, 92% of parents say they have talked with their child about healthy relationships, compared to 62% beforehand.

Healthy Hunger

We are happy to announce our upcoming Healthy Hunger snack - this is the last one for the year, so get your orders in! Orders can be placed at https://healthyhunger.ca. Please note that orders close 5 days before each lunch date. Any lunches or snacks not picked up on the day will be donated.

  • Thursday, May 22 - Menchies

Thank you for supporting our school!

Gary Weimann Award

Applications for EducationMatters Awards are now open! Students at Georges P. Vanier School can apply for the Gary Weimann Award for Community Service. The deadline is May 30. To apply, visit https://applications.educationmatters.ca, register an account, and search for the "Gary Weimann Award for Community Service" application.

Vanier Community Corner

We are looking for interesting and unique items to use as classroom hall passes - for example, one class uses a rubber duck and another has a small hub cap. These passes help minimize student traffic during class time and allow teachers to quickly identify students in the hallway. If you have any items that fit this description, please send them to school and we will gladly put them to use.

We are also looking for gently used guitars to support our growing Guitar class, to be used as loaners for students who want to bring a guitar home. Guitar cases would also be a great help.

Track and Field

Track and field tryouts begin the week of April 27, with the meet on Monday, June 1. Students must attend a minimum of 2 tryouts for each sport they are interested in within a 4-week span (April 27 - May 22).
