Weekly Update Oct. 30 - Nov. 3 | Forms, Lifetouch Appointments, Sports, Gear Up
Dear Lynx families/Chères familles de Lynx,
Welcome to the end of the second month of the school year. You should be receiving the second monthly update from your child(ren)’s teacher in the next week. If you do not receive this, please reach out and let us know.
The University of Calgary is about to start its Girls Excel in Mathematics program (GEM). Mme Shah and the Vanier students are looking forward to returning this year with the largest contingent in the entire city. This includes public, catholic, charter and private schools. In a nod to all the hard work the math team here has done to build a culture of math curiosity, we even have more students attending than the STEM school!
Grade 6 vaccinations will take place on Monday for parents who sent back the forms. The AHS team has shared the following information for parents. See handout under Resources.
We have gotten a few emails and phone calls about the upcoming fall break. This is new to the CBE calendar this year and begins November 9. Teachers will be in that day, but it is a non-school day for students. School will begin again for staff and students on the November 15.
Finally, I would like to welcome Amanda Thomson to GP Vanier. She joins our team in the roles of PE/Health and Math/Science support across the school. She has attached the following welcome message for families:
I'm Amanda Thomson, and I'm absolutely delighted to be joining the George P Vanier family. Originally from the Yukon, I have a deep-rooted passion for the outdoors and promoting a healthy lifestyle. On my days off I am up to adventures hiking, downhill skiing, coaching cross country skiing or simply reading a book. I will be teaching health and providing math/science support to a range of students and grades. I am excited to get to know everyone and to become part of the greater community!
Bonne fin de semaine,
Chad Edmonds – Principal GP Vanier

Sports Updates
Bonne chance to our sports teams, Go Lynx! Félicitations and congratulations to our basketball teams this week who have played some excellent games against schools in our division. All CBE middle schools have set similar expectations for games that promote safety, respect, and a positive experience for all. They include:
- All student spectators/athletes must be under the direct supervision of a designated adult
- There are no in and out privileges for spectators
- Student spectators without adult supervision will be directed by the hosting school administration to leave the building
- All spectators - students or adults - are expected to cheer and support players/coaches/referees/parents/guardians in a positive manner
- Disrespectful behaviours will be addressed by school administration promptly and may result in spectators being directed to leave the game and the school building
Gear Up
Different institutions around Calgary are hosting an event on November the 9th where families can access resources for students who may need some support with getting winterized or getting connected to some amazing community resources.
